Once again this semester our Academic Staff presented Research Workshops around the country and Namibia. Feedback from students indicates that these workshops are very useful in giving our Research students the tools they need to write their proposals and research articles. Since the inception of the workshops, we can see a massive improvement in the way students are putting the theory that have learned into practice.

Any distance learning studies without tuition can be a daunting task. The first question we asked ourselves was “How are we ever going to get through the work in the available time?” with the second question being “Are we even going to understand what this subject is all about?” We hope that the information below will be of assistance to students who will partake in the first year Economics modules as part of their studies.
We planned for all our studies, knowing that we have a limited period to 1. Submit assignments and 2. Prepare for exams. Our basic study roster consists of minimum 2 evenings of study per week, each consisting of 3 hours (so, we spent about 6 hours a week focused only on Economics). It is difficult to keep up with such a schedule with the challenges of work, family life and then off course the unforeseen things happening, but depending on your dedication together with the study aids and support available from your Lecturer and SBS, you will achieve success.
Do not rush through the work, take your time in this way ensuring that you spend quality time on your study efforts. Some people may find that they achieve enough through spending 2 hours behind their books. Remember, we are reflecting on what worked for us, this can vary from person to person.
Working in a study group also helps a lot. You can soundboard ideas, questions, concepts and statements with your peers, and in this way help each other with your studies. The old saying “two sets of eyes are better than one” was found to be super true when considering our study efforts.
First and foremost, before you start studying, make sure you have the correct prescribed text book. Use your prescribed text book and your study guide as an integral part of your studies. Do not expect that if you use the text book or the study guide in isolation you will achieve success. The study guide provides complimentary information to your prescribed text book. It is therefore key to use both the resources to guide you in your studies.
We also spent time on the self assessment exercises in the Study Guide. This is a useful way to evaluate if you understand the section you have dealt with, or whether your need to work through the section again. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF…don’t for the sake of progression say “ÿeah, I know enough”. Your study guide is made up of logical sequential building blocks. If you get something wrong in e.g. the production possibilities curve in the beginning, you will later pay the price when working with demand and supply, as these areas are effectively inter-related, even if may not seem so at the onset of your studies.
Another important source of information is the MySBS portal. Here you will find past exam papers, tuitorial letters etc. All of these materials are made available in order to aid you in your study efforts.
We can very well recall our first evening with the Demand concept. We thought we had it worked out, easy as pie….until we started with the self evaluation exercises. For this reason, we recommend going back, and re-working the areas which you may not have such a good grasp of. Our lecturer (Mr. van der Vyver) was also happy to assist with questions, and despite using his inputs not more than maybe 3 times in our two Economics modules, he is always willing to assist and provide you with guidance.
Cover as much of your study material as possible before completing your assignment. It helps to evaluate how you have progressed thus far, and also enables you to identify shortfalls and areas requiring your attention before the exams. Put your best effort into the assignment, do not skimp on your efforts on the assignment.
As mentioned in the introduction, distance learning is a daunting task. You have the benefit of two sessions where you can get face to face guidance from your lecturer in a semester. The first is the Smartboard presentation, and the second the Study Week presentation. Make the effort to attend one or even both of the sessions. It makes a huge difference by putting your studies in perspective.
Our lecturer (Mr. van der Vyver) used practical examples during these sessions which aim to simplify the concepts, by providing practical examples, as you and I experience in our daily lives, he is able to string a continuous story together, without deviating from what is important.
If you are unable to attend these sessions SBS usually uploads the session onto Youtube, take the time to listen to the presentation, with its slides, to help you on your way. We for example used the Youtube video for revision before exams, and as reference in sections we needed guidance on once we worked through all the content in the Study Guide.
Here we set up a pre-determined preparation roster, in order to review all the work done in the semester, and to focus on the guidelines provided in the Examination Info posted on MySBS. We also downloaded the previous exam papers, in order to obtain a view on how questions are being asked in the exam, and to use as exercises.
As mentioned earlier, we also spent time reviewing the Smartboard presentation again, to recap on the semester’s work.
Make sure you have enough scrap paper to practice your graphs on. There is only one way to understand and become proficient in graphs, and that is to draw, draw and draw again.
Throughout your preparation for the exam, ensure that you use your study guide, your prescribed text book and your exam info letter as an integrated tool to study from. Where possible, review your Assignment questions, as well the Tutorial letter, to check on which areas require more attention. We have found that around 24 hours of preparation time is sufficient to achieve an above average mark in your exams.
We wish you all the success with your Economics studies. It’s fun, useful and actually very logical, once you grasp the overall concepts, but most importantly, you are the architect of your success. Success is dependent upon your commitment and desire to succeed.
